1. A gate valve is a type of pipeline valve in which the locking element (gate) moves perpendicular to the flow axis. Gate valves in pipelines are used only to fully open or close the flow, but not for regulation or throttling.


2. When the gate valve is closed, the sealing surfaces can only be sealed under the action of the working medium pressure, i.e., the medium pressure presses the sealing surface of the gate against the seat, ensuring tightness—this is called self-sealing. Most gate valves use forced sealing, i.e., when closing, external force is required to press the gate against the seat to ensure tightness.


3. When the gate valve is opened, when the valve rises to a height equal to 1:1 of the passage diameter, the channel for the medium is fully open, but during operation this position cannot be controlled. In practice, the extreme upper position of the stem (the “no further” position) is taken as full opening. To avoid jamming due to thermal deformation, the stem is usually turned back 1/2-1 turn after reaching the extreme position - this is considered the fully open position. Thus, the fully open position is determined by the position of the valve (its stroke).
